Week 1: Defining Biblical Trust

Theme: Moving from intellectual agreement to functional trust.

The Deep Dive

Objective: Define trust as a deliberate choice to lean one's full weight on God’s character rather than an emotional feeling of safety. We distinguish between "optimism" (hoping for the best) and "biblical trust" (confidence in God regardless of the outcome).

Key Scriptures: Proverbs 3:5-6; Psalm 62:8

Discussion Prompts

  • What is the difference between "trusting God" and "being an optimistic person"?
  • In what area of your life is it hardest to "lean not on your own understanding"?
  • How does our modern culture make it difficult to trust in things we cannot see?
"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream." — Jeremiah 17:7-8

Practical Application

Identify one specific worry that you want to consciously pray to God that He may grant you the desire to trust Him with.

Prayer Focus

Asking for the courage to let go of the "illusion of control."

Week 2: When the Storm Hits

Theme: Exploring the reality of "storms" in a christian's life.

The Deep Dive

Objective: To realize that being in God's will does not exempt us from storms, but it ensures His presence within them. Jesus sleeping in the boat is not absence of care, but presence of peace.

Key Scriptures: Mark 4:35-41; Isaiah 43:2

Discussion Prompts

  • Why do we often assume that following God should result in "smooth sailing"?
  • Jesus was asleep in the storm. How do you handle God’s "apparent silence" during your crises?
  • How can a storm reveal truths about our faith that "fair weather" cannot?
"He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven." — Psalm 107:29-30

Practical Application

Note down what you've learnt about the realities of storms in christian life. Also note down how you desire to respond going forward.

Prayer Focus

For those currently in a "life storm"—for peace that surpasses understanding.

Week 3: Growing in suffering

Theme: God never wastes a season of suffering.

The Deep Dive

Objective: To view the season of suffering as a place of spiritual formation and refinement. We explore how suffering produces endurance, character, and hope.

Key Scriptures: Romans 5:3-5; Genesis 50:20

Discussion Prompts

  • How do we reconcile a loving God with the existence of deep personal pain?
  • What does it mean for "suffering to produce character" in your experience?
  • Is it possible to be joyful and grieving at the same time?
"And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you." — 1 Peter 5:10

Practical Application

Reflect on how differently you ought to think of and approach suffering after the lessons in this chapter.

Prayer Focus

Thanking God for His sovereignty over the "broken pieces" of our lives.

Week 4: Waiting in the Silence

Theme: Addressing the spiritual fatigue of waiting.

The Deep Dive

Objective: To learn how to "wait actively" (with expectation) rather than "wait passively" (with apathy). Waiting is not wasted time.

Key Scriptures: Psalm 13; Isaiah 40:31

Discussion Prompts

  • Why is "waiting" one of the hardest spiritual disciplines?
  • What are some "unhealthy" ways we try to hurry God up?
  • How do we maintain hope when the "answer" hasn't come?
"The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord." — Lamentations 3:25-26

Practical Application

Think of a time in your life when you had to wait on God. How did you respond, and what did you learn from that experience?

Prayer Focus

For patience and for the grace to trust God’s timing over our own schedules.

Week 5: The Strength of Weakness

Theme: Flipping the script on human strength.

The Deep Dive

Objective: To see our limitations as platforms for God's power to be displayed. God's power is made perfect in weakness.

Key Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10; 1 Corinthians 1:27

Discussion Prompts

  • How does the understanding of the fall of man affect our perception of weakness?
  • Why do we feel the need to look "perfect" or "put together" and not vulnerable?
  • How does admitting our weakness (being vulnerable) actually help us and other people in their faith?
"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me." — 2 Corinthians 12:9

Practical Application

Admit a specific weakness to a trusted friend this week and ask them to pray for God’s strength in that area.

Prayer Focus

For the humility to stop hiding our scars and start sharing God’s grace.

Week 6: Carrying Each Other’s Burdens

Theme: Learning to bear one another's burdens.

The Deep Dive

Objective: To learn the biblical mandate of sharing the weight of life's hardships together. We fulfill the law of Christ when we bear one another's burdens.

Key Scriptures: Galatians 6:2; Exodus 17:8-13

Discussion Prompts

  • How does rejecting help portray pride?
  • How does Christ embody humilty in bearing each other's burdens?
  • How does bearing each other's burden demand sacrifice?
"We who are strong have an obligation to bear the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up." — Romans 15:1-2

Practical Application

How do you intend to actively ask for help and offer support to others?

Prayer Focus

That our church would become a safe harbor for the heavy-laden.

Week 7: The "One Anothers"

Theme: Spiritual health is linked to the Body of Christ.

The Deep Dive

Objective: To see that we cannot grow spiritually in isolation. The "One Another" commands in the New Testament require relationships.

Key Scriptures: John 13:34-35; Hebrews 10:24-25

Discussion Prompts

  • Which "One Another" command do you find most difficult to obey?
  • What is the place of the church in helping us fulfill the responsibilities to one another?
  • How does modern "individualism" hinder our ability to be the Body of Christ?
"With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." — Ephesians 4:2-3

Practical Application

Choose your hardest "One Another" (Forgive, Encourage, Honor, Submit, Bear and so on) and pray that God would help you grow in that area.

Prayer Focus

For a spirit of unity and a "servant’s heart" within the congregation.

Week 8: Trusting God with Your Past

Theme: Healing from the past.

The Deep Dive

Objective: To trust that God can redeem our past failures and use them for His future purposes.

Key Scriptures: Joel 2:25; Philippians 3:13-14

Discussion Prompts

  • Do you find it harder to believe God has forgiven your past, or to forgive yourself?
  • How does "looking backward" keep us from "running forward" in faith?
  • How do we distinguish between guilt and godly sorrow?
"Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 3:13-14

Practical Application

Pray for God’s help in releasing guilt and embracing His restoration.

Prayer Focus

For the release of guilt and the acceptance of God’s total restoration.

Week 9: The Role of Lament

Theme: Lamenting before the Lord.

The Deep Dive

Objective: Lament is a high form of trust that brings our raw pain to a God who can handle it.

Key Scriptures: Lamentations 3:19-24; Psalm 88

Discussion Prompts

  • What examples of people do we see in the Bible who lamented before God?
  • How does God view the lamentations of his people?
"When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:17-18

Practical Application

How has this study impacted your understanding of lament?

Prayer Focus

That the Lord may help us to view Him as a refuge in times of trouble.

Week 10: Practical Hope

Theme: Developing an eternal perspective.

The Deep Dive

Objective: We learn that our current struggles are real, but they are not the end of the story. We look forward to a perfect eternity.

Key Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 4:16-18; Hebrews 6:19

Discussion Prompts

  • How does the promise of Heaven help us endure a difficult Earth?
"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." — Romans 8:18

Practical Application

Pray to God to see the present sufferings in this world in light of an eternity with Him.

Prayer Focus

Strength to persevere and keep going as we await our eternal home.
